Cheese Grater

The humble cheese grater

Why is there always a cheese grater?

I’ve arrived in scummy hostel kitchens to find the provided equipment consists of a single spoon, and a cheese grater. It’s like there’s a law or something.

Wherever there are kitchen, there also shall be cheese grater.

In my own flat here in Inverness we don’t even have any glasses; seriously, not a single one, we drink everything out of mugs; but we have a cheese grater, oh yes.

Personally I think it’s because you can’t improvise a cheese grater. You can get by without a number of complicated kitchen devices using simpler – if less effective – tools, but I defy you to grate cheese in a meaningful way without a cheese grater.

So here’s to you cheese grater, long may you survive, hidden in the cupboard under the sink.
