He is a 1st 2nd 3rd 4th year Medical Student currently studying for an intercalated BSc in Medical Sciences at the University of Aberdeen; in the city in which he was born. Medicine is not just his course, it is also his future career; his passion; and some would say (those who think him sad enough), also ‘his life’. In all honesty, he could not deny there is some truth in that statement.
But it is not his whole life. He also enjoys the hills and the mountains, a love he must credit to his friend Holly. He spent a great many Friday nights with the 1st Alford Scouts, unsuccessfully trying to bring order, when all they wanted was chaos, and not even managing to keep from getting wet in the process.
When it is raining, or looks like it might rain (so almost all the time in this part of the world) he also loves computers and computer gaming. An Apple hater for many years, he finally saw the light when an iPhone walked in to his life and made it a much happier place; although he admits the £350 that walked out of his life at around the same time was not exactly a small price to pay. The iPhone has given him 2 years of faithful service however, and has now been joined by a second iPhone (3GS) third iPhone (4s), an iPad, an TV and a MacBook Pro.
If there is a power-cut, or no one is watching, he might even pick up a book. His favourite authors include Iain M. Banks, Alastair Reynolds, Ian Irvine and JK Rowling. Science Fiction and Fantasy remain his preferred stomping ground, but any good book deserves a read. He has been know to put pen to paper himself, although doesn’t claim to be very good. His short stories can be found here, and some poetry here. A novel is in the works, but it may take some time.
Medically his interests are, and always have been, Emergency Medicine, Trauma Critical Care and Pre-Hospital Medicine. This is what he wants to do, despite the disapproving ‘tuts’ from just about every surgeon he has ever met, the sympathetic smile and the whispered, “It’s not like it is on Casualty, you know,” that is his dream; and it is an achievable one. Who knows, maybe one day he’ll wake up with the realization he wants to be a paediatrician, but for now, he’s keeping his sights fixed, well and truly, on that big red sign.
